In honor of the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games, we're taking a look at the triumphant and acclaimed Owls who have participated in games past.

The 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games are in full swing this year, and in honor of the groundbreaking achievements of this year's athletes, we're taking a look at the Temple Owls who have made it to the ultimate milestone—and even achieved victorious medal glory.

Walter Bahr, CPH ’49
Member of Olympic Team, USA, Men's Soccer, 1948
Walter Bahr played for the US national team at the 1948 Olympics. He also played on the U.S. team that upset England at the 1950 FIFA World Cup in what is often considered the biggest upset in football (soccer) history. Bahr eventually earned 19 caps with the U.S. national team, and later coached for Temple from 1970 to 1973.
Juan Ignacio Sanchez Brown, CLA ’00
Former NBA Player, 76ers, Hawks, Pistons, Warriors; Member of Olympic Team, Argentina, 2004, Men's Basketball Gold
Juan Ignacio Sánchez Brown, known as Pepe Sánchez, is a former Argentine point guard and 2004 Olympic gold medalist. He was the first Argentine in the NBA, playing two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers, Atlanta Hawks and Detroit Pistons. He won the Konex Award as one of Argentina’s top five basketball players of the decade in 2010.
Sean Casey, EDU ’01

Sean Casey (second to right in photo) was a member of the 2008 Irish National Team in Beijing. Gavin White, the head coach in 2008 for Temple men’s rowing team, lauded Sean and has said he was one of the “most driven and hard-working rowers that I’ve ever coached.” Casey later continued his rowing career as a coach of his own team in Ireland.
Athina Christoforakis, STH ’04

Athina Christoforakis is a Greek basketball player who competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics.
John Fowler Dunn, FOX ’55
Member of Olympic Team, USA, Men's Soccer, 1952
John Fowler Dunn is a retired soccer inside right who was a member of the U.S. soccer team at the 1952 Summer Olympics. He was also a four-time All-American and coached at the collegiate level. John was inducted into the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame in 1975.
Candice Dupree, CPH ’04
Member of Olympic Team, USA, Women's Basketball, 2012
Candice Dupree is currently the head coach for the women's basketball team at Tennessee State University who played for the USA women's basketball team in 2012. In 2014, Dupree won the WNBA Championship with the Phoenix Mercury. She has also played basketball professionally in Europe and Asia and was hired by the San Antonio Spurs as a player development coach in 2022.
Igor Francetić, FOX ’01
Member of Olympic Team, Croatia, Rowing, 2000, Men's 8 Bronz
Igor Francetić is a Croatian rower who won a bronze medal in the eights competition at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.
Nikki Franke, CPH ’74
Member of Olympic Team, USA, 1976, 1980, Fencing
Nikki Franke is a former fencer and fencing coach who competed in the women's individual and team foil events at the 1976 Summer Olympics. She also fenced at the 1975 and 1979 Pan American Games, earning a silver medal in the individual competition in 1975, and a bronze medal in the team event in both years. As head coach of the Temple University women’s fencing team, she was named the USFCA Coach of the Year in 1983, 1987, 1988 and 1991.
Victoria Macaulay, KLN ’13

Victoria Ayo Macaulay is a Nigerian American professional basketball player who played on Nigeria's Olympics team in 2021. She also played for the Chicago Sky in the Women's National Basketball Association in 2015 and 2019.
Diane M. Moyer, EDU ’94
Member of Olympic Team, USA Women's Field Hockey 1984 Bronze Medal
Diane Moyer, now a professor of psychology at Cedar Crest College in Allentown, had competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, earning a bronze medal on the U.S. field hockey team. She has since coached field hockey, basketball and lacrosse at institutions like Yale, Villanova and Hollins University. She was also inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
Jean Shiley Newhouse, CPH ’33
Member of Olympic Team, USA, 1932, Track, Gold Medal High Jump
Jean Shiley Newhouse was an American high jumper who tied with Babe Didrikson in the trials for the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. In the jump-off, she was awarded the gold medal.
Chester "Chet" Phillips, CPH ’37

Chester "Chet" Phillips was an American gymnast who was a member of the United States men's national artistic gymnastics team and competed at the 1936 Summer Olympics. He was also a member of the Temple Owls men's gymnastics team, and married Marie Kibler (in the photo to his right), an Olympic gymnast with him at the 1936 Summer Olympics.
Jason Read, FOX ’03
Member of Olympic Team, USA, Rowing, 2004 Gold Medalist
Jason Read is a rower who rowed in the bow seat in the 2004 Summer Olympics Gold medal-winning U.S. Men's Rowing Team Eight and was also a member of the U.S. rowing team for the 2008 Summer Olympics. Since the Olympic Games, he has worked to promote volunteerism, rowing and the Olympic movement throughout the United States. He has also coached at both Temple and the University of Pennsylvania.
Robert Stout, ENG ’55
Member of Olympic Team, USA, Gymnastics, 1952
Robert Stout was a member of the United States men's national artistic gymnastics team and competed in eight events at the 1952 Summer Olympics. He was also an intercollegiate champion at Temple University.
Kamali Thompson, CST ’12

Kamali Thompson has trained with Nikki Franke, the head fencing coach at Temple, who herself is an Olympian (see more above). She's competing as an Olympic alternate for the fencing team this year.
Ajeé Wilson, CPH ’17
Member of Olympic Team, USA, Track, 2016, 2020
Ajeé Wilson is a middle-distance runner and the 2022 World indoor champion at the 800-meter distance, after earning silver medals in 2016 and 2018. She also won bronze medals at both the 2017 and 2019 World Athletics Championships. She is the second-fastest American of all time in the event and holds a North American indoor record.
