2024 Alumni Attitude Survey Recap

This past August, we collected valuable alumni feedback that will play a key role in shaping future initiatives and programs. Here is a roundup of the key survey findings.

Temple University Advancement Engagement deeply values the insights and perspectives of our alumni community. Your feedback plays a critical role in shaping the future of our alumni programs, communities and opportunities, allowing us to better connect and engage you. In August 2024, we invited all alumni to share their experiences, thoughts and ideas through a comprehensive survey. This valuable input has helped us evaluate our existing offerings and chart a course for initiatives that are meaningful and resonate with our alumni community. The last time a comprehensive alumni survey of this nature was conducted was in 2014.

Below are key findings from the survey outcomes, along with details about current programs and opportunities that align with your feedback. We’ve also outlined strategies and ideas to address the insights shared. Thank you for your ongoing support and for helping us build a stronger alumni community!  🍒

Survey Demographics

Respondents by State

The survey received a total of 2,876 responses, a significant increase compared to the 2,145 responses in the 2014 iteration. Nearly half of the respondents were from Pennsylvania, with the remainder distributed across various states. A heat map of the responses by state is provided on the left for further reference.

Respondents by Age

The survey received a balanced response across nearly all age cohorts, with each group between the ages of 20 and 79 contributing between 347 and 463 responses. The highest number of responses came from individuals aged 30 to 39, with 463 total submissions. Additionally, 110 responses were received from individuals aged 80 and older.

Alumni Experience

Alumni responses to this question have remained relatively consistent compared to the 2014 survey. However, these responses are not at the level of our peer or comparison schools. We aim to see more alumni in the 'good' and 'excellent' categories regarding their experiences. To achieve this, we hope to continue offering surveys and opportunities for alumni to provide feedback.

This will allow us to evaluate and enhance our offerings to better meet the expectations of our alumni community. Interested in staying connected and sharing your feedback more regularly? Explore your alumni volunteer opportunities.

We also intend to leverage the results and key findings from this study to explore what motivates alumni engagement across different age brackets and life cycle stages. This will help us segment our programs and opportunities to better align with the identified needs and wants of alumni at various points in their lives.  Additionally, the team plans to research the peer and comparison schools included in the study to understand what drives engagement within their alumni communities. By learning from their experiences, we can apply relevant insights to improve our own alumni engagement efforts.

Alumni Activity Importance

Do you believe it is important for alumni in general to do the following?

Show Temple pride by wearing Temple University gear

61% of respondents

Mentoring or identifying job opportunities for students or alumni

58%

Networking with other alumni

50%

Update contact information to stay connected to Temple

47%

Attending general alumni and Temple University events

40%

When respondents were asked what activities they believe it's important for alumni to participate in, many highlighted the importance of showing Temple pride by wearing university gear, mentoring students, identifying job opportunities for students and alumni, networking with fellow alumni, staying connected through events and updating contact information.

Building on these findings, we plan to explore further what drives alumni engagement. We will focus on areas with lower participation, such as volunteering for Temple and enhancing connections with the university, using these insights as a foundation for boosting engagement in the coming year. This will enable us to better tailor our programs and initiatives to meet the evolving needs of Temple alumni at different stages of their personal and professional lives. By leveraging these insights, we aim to develop more effective strategies to strengthen the Temple alumni community and increase engagement across all areas.

Frequency of Engagement

In response to the prompt, “In your relationship with Temple University, please describe how often you do or have done each of the following,” alumni responses highlight occasional engagement with activities such as reading email newsletters, connecting with fellow alumni, and visiting campus. However, regular participation remains low across most areas, including attending events, engaging with social media, and visiting the university's digital platforms. Opportunities exist to deepen connections by showcasing the value and opportunities for alumni to engage in ways that align with their interests and needs.

These include events such as Homecoming and Family Weekend, athletics games or programs, arts events, and regional alumni network opportunities. We aim to showcase these opportunities through alumni newsletters and encourage alumni to follow Temple University (@templeuniv) and Temple Alumni (@templealumni) social media channels to stay informed about the variety of ways to stay involved.

Additionally, there is an opportunity to strengthen alumni connections by promoting and supporting alumni-owned businesses. Alumni are encouraged to explore the Temple Alumni-Owned Business Directory to identify and support "Temple Made" businesses. Are you a Temple Made business owner? Be sure to list your business and become part of this growing network!

By taking advantage of these opportunities, we hope to foster a more connected, engaged, and thriving alumni community. Temple University is committed to providing meaningful ways for alumni to reconnect, celebrate, and share in the pride of being Temple Made!
